What does a uni degree mean these days?
August 3rd 2006 00:10
You know, I was always told that if you do well in the HSC and go to uni, you'll be rich and successful... That's such bullshit... I can't believe my parents and all the adults around me were so ignorant...
I really wish I'd left school in year 10 and got into a trade or entered the workforce... Gained experience then went to tafe to study for the HSC and go to uni to study something I really wanted to... Or get a degree that I really needed for a career that I really wanted to succeed...
It took me almost 6 years to get a 3 year degree cause I didn't know what I wanted to do... I finally know now... I'm looking to study law... But I could have gained so much experience and in turn experienced so much about work and money in at least 3 of those 6 long and dreaded years... It's so funny... I so wish that someone would have told me about the realities of life when I was younger...
Well I guess there's no point whining about that now... Now my challenge is to fulfill the goals I have at the moment... I suppose the good thing is that I've gone through that dreary experience and so my kids can benefit from that later...
But it's quite funny... I'm sure even the majority of the population now still think that uni is the key to success... From what I understand, experience and work ethic is the key... If you have the determination, you can succeed in any field as long as you know how...
Right now I'm determined to study law and get a law degree so that one day I can be an academic lawyer... Now a lot of people have, I think and forked opinion about lawyers... They respect them because they can earn a fair bit and you have to be "smart" to graduate a law degree but at the same time they view them as a type of parasite that is out there to suck money out of people...
I disagree with this common view that is painted predominantly by television... Have you ever had a look at a court hearing or case and tried to understand just what on earth they are talking about? Law is quite a complex thing... And what lawyers do is, that provide a service in order to interpret that complex information using their years of training... Now, if you toilet is broken, you call a plumber and pay for their service. If you have some issue involving the law, you call a lawyer and pay for their service... Either profession can "suck" money out of you... If you perceive as it being that way...
Anyways... I want to be a lawyer because of the prestige that comes with it... and not necessarily from strangers, but the prestige that people around me, the people I care about will recognise if I succeed... Now you may think that's shallow... Doing something to impress others... But we do things to impress others everyday... I feel like I've just realised that there's nothing wrong with it... Who doesn't want to be respected for their profession???
Fortunately or unfortunately, this is going to be a long an arduous journey because I realised this dream quite late... But then I guess that's part of the "joys" of life... facing challenges and overcoming them... It's just so hard sometimes... especially if you think alot about things~~ heh heh...
Conclusion... lawyers are good~! hahaha

But yes, today experience overrides qualifications. So many employers out there do not bother with training newbies. Even still, who says you need to look for a job? You can open your business and hit off from there.. I think all you need to do to be successful in life is to be money smart and have good people skills.
