USEFUL OR SUCCESSFUL LIFE?
March 1st 2007 21:03
If I had to choose a word for my epitaph that encapsulated my life, I’d rather have led a useful life than a successful one, ……….I think………….How about you…….???
I would rather be remembered as someone who was capable, had some value or benefit and offered something to someone or the world in general, rather than someone who achieved great wealth, power or fame, unless I had achieved same through dedication and hard work and utilised my success to make some small difference to the imbalance that exists in our world today.
To me, useful, as a word doesn’t conjure the glamorous imagery of success, it’s such a practical, functional, no-nonsense, dig a well; plough the fields….down and dirty ….but that suits me just fine…… success has my mind dancing with thoughts of prestige cars, waterfront property, and jewellery that cost the national GDP of a small third world country, and a sense of excess and wastefulness.
Can one be considered both successful and useful?
I guess some folk do have “it all” and make very real contributions to society, but generally, I don’t think the two make great travelling companions…..Success breeds success and it seems quite addictive and all consuming, leaving little time for anything but striving for more success.
Maybe I will choose a totally different word altogether before my meter expires in the parking lot of life…………………….

I'm not choosing my own epitaph ...
I'm banking on James Cameron discovering my body, recognising it as Jesus ... and trying to work out why there's more than one female corpse in my coffin with me ... *
I'll leave it up to James and the Media to write my epitaph...
They'll come up with a Head-line or two, I'm sure ...

I think James Cameron would come up with something more along these lines:
Fuck God. He decieved me again, and made me look like a complete idiot, when I'm better than He'll ever be."
He'd steal a line from Bad Boy Bubby, and say to the media:
"Bubby, it is the duty of every human being to remove the memory of God's existence from their minds." ... (The Defrocked Priest) ...
