THE THOUGHT FOR THE DAY IS ........CHOOSE MUSIC FOR A LOVED ONE'S FUNERAL WITH CARE, FOR IT WILL FOREVER EVOKE MEMORIES.....
13 years ago the love of my life died, sadly he never made his 40'th birthday.
He was a classical music buff and one of his favourite pieces was Pachabel's Canon in D major,so it was a shoe in for the music that accompanied his coffin arriving into the chapel.
After spending 2 months at his side in intensive care until his life support was turned off, looking back I realise that I had wrapped myself in a "bubble", everything revolved around him and his recovery or whether he wouldnt recover. I certainly was very introspective and that this music would bring up deep emotions for the rest of my life never occured to me.
The evening I returned to my flat after staying with friends after the funeral I was greeted by the sounds of the boy upstairs who was learning violin, whilst I had been away he had progressed from "Twinkle Twinkle" to murdering Pachabel's Canon. I promptly cranked my stereo up full to drown him out.
Over the years the song has caught me my suprise on many occasions, Its a real favourite as Elevator Music and in upmarket Department Stores, even in Bangkok and Bucharest.
It is of course, I later discovered, a popular choice of brides for their walk down the aisle.
I was at the airport in Vientane in Laos and it was playing. Sometimes it doesnt stir strong emotions, just a fleeting pang of sadness. Hearing it in another hospital years later when my grandmother's life lay in the balance it brought tears to my eyes. Today I was shopping at the local market and the beer bottle busker who normally plays "Banana's in Pajama's" and "Waltzing Matilda" decided to belt out a fairly cheesy rendition which curtailed my spending spree and sent me scurrying home.
In some ways I am glad I chose it as when I hear it it brings back memories, some of the memories are painful, but I choose not to dwell on those and remember the fun and good times we shared.
In my will I have requested an obscure tibetan chanting CD be played at my service, my brother and mother have copies of this along with my will....
