Maybe folks are unkind due to the ignorant me-firstism of narrow self-interest, pretending that no one gets hurt by your grasping for comfortable, insulated prosperity. And primordially it's spiritual stinginess -- having so small a conception of your own soul that you seek solace in comparisons with others you consider beneath you.
