The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid

This novel, shortlisted for the Man booker prize in 2007, is set in Pakistan where a young Pakistani man settles down to speak with an uneasy American and tells him his story. It is about conventions and they way they make us think about people. Now I was somewhat reluctant to start by saying that because people tend to think that it is a bad thing if a novel is trying to teach you something or at least something obvious but I don't think it necessicarly is. In addition this novel is not trying to shove it down your throat.
It is the story of a young man from Pakistan who goes to America for a Princeton college education. He is living the dream but as with all dreams you must wake up at some point.
The novel will bring you into a world that most people have no idea about it is a sociey apart within a society we completely farmiliar with. You will feel sympathy for the character Changez but you will hate him also for his views. It is not about intolerance or racism it is about teh differences in people who seem very simialar. It is about the things that a human being can't withstand and the things they can't.
The Reluctanat Fundamentalist is a short novel but it has a lot more to say than a lot of epics that I have read. It is exciting, heartwarming and frustrating. something I would definetely recommend picking up.
