Straight by Dick Francis

Dick Francis is one of those authors who I always look out for when I am browsing around second hand bookshops. I don't go after him when I am willing to splash out a bit because to be honest he is not really worth it. It is hard to put into words why I read books by Dick Francis but I will try by say that I just can't help it. His books are predictable and all of them follow pretty much the same basic story line but I can't help loving.
Here is how it works. There will be a main character who is either a jump jockey used to be one or has at least some involvement in the whole horse racing industry. Lets not fault Mr Francis on that though, people always say that you should write what you know and he knows horse racing because he used to be a jockey. Secondly there will be another character who is involved in a very specific industry, this may be our main character if he is not a jockey. Either way the industry will be very well reasearched. It is because of Dick Francis that I know how glass blowing work and it is due to this installment Straight I know about the gems indusrty. Thirdly our character will meet a girl who is not very suitable for him, he will be very unromantic and not that interested really but will end up with her. Lastly the character will be beaten up badly but jump up from it and contiune on his non professional quest to solve the mystery that has somehow fallen into his unwitting lap. Perfect.
Straight is as good an example as any. It is about a jump jockey whoes brother dies and our Character Derek takes over his gem business finding out how is works and solving the mystery of the missing dimonds and stumbling across his brothers deepest secrects. There is nothign amazing about this and you won't pick up the book and think it deserves a prize but you will enjoy it. As you will enjoy every piece of fluff he turns out but you won't really know why. My best guess is that it is cosy reading. Something to read when you are heading to bed realy on a rainy night and want something to lightly entertain you before you sleep. Perect for when you don't want to turn the tv on but don't really want to challange yourself too much either

A good book is one you enjoy reading.
I like "literature". But I also like a good story. And some writers just have the knack of getting you hooked because they tell such good stories.
Going to parties and listening to people rave about "literature" is really quite tedious. You know the people are wankers. You just have to humour them and drink yourself into a stupour to cope with their pretentious bullshit.

In real life I'm a total mute. I know the minute I say something, I'll upset someone's sensibiltities.
I think I do it on the net a bit too. But that's only because people attack me for no reason. Other than they're not happy with themselves. Or haven't had their voice listened to ever, as well.
It's nice to have a voice. Even if it is just a text one.
But that's what writing is all about. It's about having a voice. We've all heard people speak. They use words to speak. The same ones you see on the page.
Boy humans are stupid.
