LESSON 3 - What goes around Comes around

August 24th 2006 15:29

Now I'm a bit unsure about this one... I definitely don't like to see life in this manner... You know, that there is some force moderating it~ I mean it's so easy to view that way, for most, at least, I guess, heh... But maybe because of what we're taught, I think this is an effective lesson to learn...

What goes around comes around...

There are so many examples, especially recently, of things that have happened in my life in this way... Now as I've stated... I don't believe life works this way... Things happen by courses of actions... You could say randomly, some may say pre-determined"ly" hmmm... But I think an assuring way to look at it is just to think in terms of the phrase above...

If you live your life according to that phrase... and I don't mean ever so diligently, but socially acceptably... Which means - You don't have to go out of your way to do "nice" things~ I believe doing things that put you in a disadvantagious position with the effort strongly outweighing the benefits is an act of stupidity~

Ah I can think of one example off the top of my head... Finding a wallet and handing it to the nearest "authority"~ I was at one of the uni stores once - the ones that sell lollies, notebooks, pens and have photocopy machines... I can't remember what I was doing there but I was with a friend and found a Burberry (I think) wallet by a photocopy machine... Someone had left it there... As soon as I saw it, my mind was racing, thinking - "hmmm should I just casually pick that up?" There was a fifty hanging out of it... So my eyes were like wide open~ heh. But my friend, he decided to pick it up and hand itdirectly to the clerk at the counter. Before I could do anything about it... We walked out of the store and I was thinking, "WTF?"

Now you may think I'm a jerk? Oh my, how awful~ Stealing is wrong, didn't your mother teach you that? Fuk no~ That ain't stealing.. That's what I call making the most of a given opportunity.. I had the opportunity to make an easy 50 bucks... I didn't steal it~ The dumbass left it there~ I'm a realist... Well that's how I thought at the time...

But recent events have made me think otherwise... I can give you two examples... One is of a friend (different to previous) who lost his wallet while we were out drinking one night... The loss was more of an inconvenience then anything else... I don't think the wallet nor the contents were of much value to him.. I mean he had all his cards and stuff in there, but he cancelled all the necessary ones straight away so there was no loss... Had it been me, who'd lost their wallet, I'd be choking myself... Firstly it's one of my most valued possessions... not only for monetary worth but because it was a priceless gift from my gf... Also because I have some valueable photos in it - also priceless... anywho... about a week, week and a half later... he received his wallet in the mail..~! I was friggin shocked when I heard about it. Wow people actually do that kind of stuff... Now granted the 20 or so dollars that were in the wallet were missing, who knows where that ended up~ But the fact that someone went to the trouble of picking it up, packaging it, going to the post office, paying for the parcel and mailing it off just shocked me... I realised that not all people in this world were worthless pricks~

Another incident happened to me... and very recently... I was shopping at a nearby shopping centre... I had bought all the stuff I'd wanted and was heading to the car park to go home... But as I got in the car I noticed that one bag was missing... I think I was carrying 3 shopping bags that night and one was missing, which is pretty pathetic I must admit... But yeah... So I ran back inside the centre, had to run up the wrong escalator because the right one was packed with people - mind you I almost stacked it and had to bear hearing the fading sniggers of the people in the opposite escalator... I ran to all the places I'd been... Looked everywhere~ checked the toilets, of course couldn't find it... Now the contents of that bag were worth no more than $40... Wouldn't have been a terrible loss... But you know that feeling, where you've just bought it, makes you feel a little good, then to be taken away like that without even being able to enjoy your buy at all~ that feeling was killing me... Anyways... defeated and walking back to the car I noticed the information desk... Why not, I thought... and without any hope I asked the lady... "Has anyone turned in a shopping bag?" "What was inside?" she asks... and to my surprise I see it there on her desk... I quickly described the contents and she handed it over to me~ wow... once again... another act of, what seemed to me like, irrationality~ but hey it happened...

That made me realise that I'd better start acting abit more social and change my thoughts... It feels like if I don't... then I'll experience a greater loss later... Now of course if a certain course of action is taken or occurs then I may suffer a great loss regardless of whether I follow my new found ideal of "helping the other"... but hey, at least if it does... then I won't feel like it was because I didn't follow that phrase above~ heh...

Now of course that doesn't mean I'll throw away my realist ways... If I find a wallet with a fifty in it... That fifty is mine! But... instead of just throwing the wallet in the gutter.... Now I will make sure to mail it back to the owner as a sign of gratitude for giving me their fifty~ heh heh...

Heej,

I enjoy reading your thoughts. Your posts entail similar thoughts to my own and I think its interesting reading these rather than thinking them. I was never a good writer so its hard for me to read my own thoughts on paper....thanks for creating this blog.

I'll be back....

Jimbo
