EFFORT IN RELATIONSHIPS
February 28th 2007 23:16
How much effort should be exerted in maintaining a relationship; platonic, professional, familial or romantic?
I can recall at various times in my life, expending a great deal of emotional and physical effort, trying in vain to sustain associations that probably had in all honesty, passed their use by dates.
To me a healthy relationship requires a solid foundation of mutual respect, and depending on the context, love, to have any reciprocal benefits and longevity.
If the essence at the heart of an affiliation is pure and honest from the outset, then surely the rapport between the individuals will consist of effortless emotional transactions, flowing and free running like a freshwater stream, requiring little or no energy expenditure, running its course, changing along the way due to circumstances, yet retaining its purity unless polluted by outside influences? Romantic huh?
How often I find myself listening for the sub-text, reading between the lines, looking for hidden agenda’s, I find it exhausting. I crave connections that are transparent and
quite simply, truthful. No need for a debrief following a discussion, and end to complex negotiations, farewell to the interpretations of psychologists and others, just plain and simple honest and straightforward communication, all the cards on the table, what you see and hear is what you get, warts and all……..

I reckon about this much effort should be made:
Then it qualifies as a relationship (not a partnership ... with effort-full financial transactions ...
