COGNITIVE RESTRUCTURING & RECOVERY FROM SUBSTANCE ABUSE

Mouthful huh! Well, thats my homework from Group Therapy last week and I feel like I need a degree to even read it let alone take it in the contents. Sometimes I wish I wish I'd stayed at school, got the leaving certificate or the HSC or gone to Uni or even Tafe, but instead I left school and 15 toured with a band, got in the film industry, travelled a lot and..........woke up age 43 in a hospital with a drip in my hand and some oxygen thingy up my nose...I got a PHD from the school of life..
So basically the gist of the homework is thus..
Everyone thinks about what they experience. What I think affects how I feel about the experiences and how I respond. We are often unaware of the thoughts as they are automatic, but the thoughts influence or moods and behaviours.
If thoughts are irrational, (systematic error in reasoning), they may sabotage as they can negatively influence a person's mood which can lead to self-destructive behaviours.
So when something happens and you have an automatic negative thought the idea is you challenge the thought, critically assess it to ascertain if it is valid or not. This is where I have trouble, I can debate with myself for ages that the thought is irrational, try to put it into context and not automatically assume the worst, and the automatic negative thoughts have been around so long that they most often win.
If you conclude that the thought is irrational you replace it with a helpful or realistic thought.
I have been told that it takes practice, and I have time on my hands and it fits with my theme of the week which is positive thinking so why not give it a burl I say...........
