A long Way Down by Nick Hornby

July 14th 2009 13:18

Nick Hornby has a way of writing where the first person narrator treats you like friend that they ran into and are tellign thier story to. This can be a good thing and a bad thing becuase it lets you get to know the characters very well but at the same time it can distract you from what is actually going on in some ways. It is rare though that the less favourable side comes through because Hornby is a very good writer and he makes you feel, as the reader, that you are being kept in the loop. That there are probably in between bits that he is not telling you about but that are not really that important anyway.

The novel follows ninty days in the lives of four people who met on the roof of Toppers House( so called for its popularity as a jumping off spot) on new years eve. These four people have nothing in common but their desire to kill themselves on that night but they decide to spend some time together just becasue. Ok I know that sounds pretty marouse and in some ways, yes, the book it s bit depressing but it is also very funny. That is not a controdiction either. One of the charatcers in the novel says it best(though it is in reltion to something else)
Thus is the contradtion of the human condition
. It is not funny that they are going to kill themselves and that theme is never really lifted from the novel but the characters themselves are funny even though they are generally not trying to be. They are being who they are and the contracst between each of the characters and their relationship with each other leads to some very good comedy moments.

[I]A long Way Down[/I is not exactly what I would call a page turner and that is because it is nto an exciting story where you can't wait to find out what happens next but then it is not trying to be. It is more or less about the human condition and how people cope with what life throws at them but in a light hearted way.
