A long Way Down by Nick Hornby
July 14th 2009 13:18
Nick Hornby has a way of writing where the first person narrator treats you like friend that they ran into and are tellign thier story to. This can be a good thing and a bad thing becuase it lets you get to know the characters very well but at the same time it can distract you from what is actually going on in some ways. It is rare though that the less favourable side comes through because Hornby is a very good writer and he makes you feel, as the reader, that you are being kept in the loop. That there are probably in between bits that he is not telling you about but that are not really that important anyway.
Thus is the contradtion of the human condition
. It is not funny that they are going to kill themselves and that theme is never really lifted from the novel but the characters themselves are funny even though they are generally not trying to be. They are being who they are and the contracst between each of the characters and their relationship with each other leads to some very good comedy moments.| 62 |
